COSTA MESA, CA
(OC FAIR)
REVIEW

PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW!

Al was playing at the OC fair for 5 days, but I only went to the Friday show on July 20, 2007. I went with my friends Andy and Gail to this one as well. We left the house at 6:00AM to catch an 8:00AM plane to the Santa Ana airport. We arrived in Santa Ana around 10:00AM, got to our hotel and relaxed for a few hours. We went over to the fair around 2:00PM just to see what the fair was like. Me and Andy were wearing the same t-shirt (the black one with the Straight Outta Lynwood cover on it), so we got a lot of people reacting to us. We stopped at this booth where this guy was making caricatures of people. Well, we had time to kill so Andy and myself were going to get a caricature made of us (Gail wasn't interested). This guy wanted to incorporate Al in the picture somewhere. It actually turned out very well. It was a picture of me and Andy carrying Al tied up and trying to throw him in the trunk of the car (the car that is on the Straight Outta Lynwood shirt). Very amusing. Anyway, by then it was like 3:30PM and we were still very tired and knew the show would not start until 8:00PM. So we went back to the hotel to sleep for a couple more hours. We headed back over to the fair around 6:00PM, sat down and had some dinner at the fair. We then walked over to Al's stage and started handing out the petitions to get "Weird Al" into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. There, we ran into one of our online friends, Cindybob who was also handing out petitions. That was pretty cool. We talked for a while until the security made us move because they were going to let general admission in. While we were waiting to get in we ran into a bunch of our online friends: Dave, Melissa, Christina, Kristine, Diva, Helen, kidcid...there were a bunch more but I can't remember them all at the moment.

We finally got to our seats. Gail and I were in the 3rd row while Andy was in the 7th row. I was sitting next to Christina and Cindybob. So we had a lot of fun. Steve Jay's family came to the show and they were sitting pretty close to us. As it got closer and closer to the show, we noticed that the row in front of us was not being filled. Once we heard "Fun Zone" start, me, Gail, Cindybob and Christina all jumped up into the row in front of us. I called Andy over because there was another available seat. And security didn't stop us.

Al comes out and does "Polkarama!" This was such an energetic crowd. Everyone was dancing and singing a long. The performance was pretty much the same as it was at Summerfest. I was able to take one picture, but lucky me, my battery died. So no more pictures throughout the rest of the concert...unfortunately.

Anyway, Al came out and did "Canadian Idiot" which I am slowly beginning to like more and more. I mean, I've always liked this song, but it's becoming one of my favorite parodies on Straight Outta Lynwood. The drums are so loud in this performance. I never really noticed the canadian colors and images on the screen in the backround. The streamers shot out at the end of the song, and we were able to collect some again.

"Close But No Cigar" was next. It was pretty much the same as when he sang it at Summerfest review. He was wearing the sunglasses and black hat. The "Aw yeah...Aw no...Aw yeah....Aw no....Alright!" part was pretty funny this time. He was really shaking/nodding his head and waving his arms.

Then came "Bob." This was the first time I have ever seen this song performed live. In the backround he had the video for "Bob" going. I like this version better than the one on the Poodle Hat album. Al extends the harmonica solos, and it sounds really cool. And he really did sound like Bob Dylan.

After "Bob" wass "It's All About The Pentiums". I love this song and this performance. The crowd was so energetic, and I was sitting with all these people who knew every word...well, I did too, but I'm not use to sitting next to people singing every word with me. It was a lot of fun! Al really seemed to be having a great time that night.

Well, while the video clips were going, the people who had the seats Gail and myself were in showed up. So I had to move back to my seat. Which wasn't so bad because it was only a row behind me. By the time I got back to my seat, I realized that Dave "Elvis" Rossi had moved up to Christina's original seat. So now, I'm sitting between Gail and Dave. Anyway, "You're Pitiful" was next. This was even funnier the second time seeing it. All of the shirts he takes off are so funny. And of course, when he was wearing the "ATLANTIC RECORDS SUCKS" shirt, it got a huge response from the audience. And the Spongebob shirt, boxers with hearts on them, and tutu got an even bigger response!

As luck would have it, the people who had tickets in the seat Andy was sitting in showed up. So now Andy moved back to his original seat. Luckily this all happened during video clips, so the concert wasn't interrupted at all. So then, Al comes out and does "Wanna B Ur Lovr". I had thought he cut this out of the setlist because he didn't do it at Summerfest. But I was very pleased to see that he did not cut it out of the set list. This is one of my favorite performances. The costume was different from the Poodle Hat tour. Instead of being all white, it was all red...and he had a red hawaiian shirt on underneath. He came down the stairs and sang a couple of lines to Kristine and Helen. Very energetic performance and a huge response from the crowd

Guess what? While the video clips were going after "Wanna B Ur Lovr", the people who had the tickets for the seats Christina and Cindybob were sitting in showed up. So then they moved back to their original seats which forced Dave back to his original seat. So now, I was sitting between Gail and Christina again. Wow, this night seemed like musical chairs.

Well, then the medely started with "Couch Potato." I noticed that he did not sing the line "Anna Nicole, she's scaring me" I wonder if he cut that out because she recently passed away. That's pretty classy if he did it for that reason. Anyway, "Do I Creep You Out?" was next. Our whole group decided that when he sang the line "Can I sniff the pit stains on your blouse" we would all raise our arms to show our armpits. So when it came to that line, we all did it and Al kinda looked at us and gave us a little smile. "Headline News" was after "Do I Creep You Out?" and he did the verse about Paris Hilton. The crowd had a big response to that. This was the most interactive crowd I think I have ever been in it. The crowd really made this concert even more fun than normal. "Confessions Part III" was next follwed by "A Complicated Song". Everyone loved "How was I suppose to know we were both related?" Then came "Bedrock Anthem", the crowd was so loud with the response "YABBA DABBA YABBA DABBA DABBA DOO NOW!" So much fun. "Ode To A Superhero" was after "Bedrock Anthem". The look that Al and Joe give each other during this song is so funny. And Joe looked bored when he wasn't doing anything, which made it even funnier. Then was "Pretty Fly For A Rabbi" it was so energetic and the crowd was SO LOUD. It was so much fun. Then came "Trapped In the Drive Thru" follwed by "Gump" and "Eat It". Which are always fun performances.

"I'll Sue Ya" was the song after the medely. It was pretty much the same, only this time during the line "I'll sue ya, I'll take all of your money, I'll sue ya if you even look at me funny", what seemed to be dollar bills were falling out into the crowd. I picked one up and took a closer look at it and found that it was a fake $100 with Al's head on it instead of Benjamin Franklin and on the back was the cover of Straight Outta Lynwood.

After "I'll Sue Ya" Al runs off the stage to change costumes while we watch video clips. When the video clips were over, all of a sudden all of these storm troopers and darth vadar come on the stage. All of them were standing there like a statue. Then "The Saga Begins" starts. While Al was singing he interacted with the storm troopers a lot. He was hugging one of them while he was singing "Maybe vadar someday later now he's just a small fry." Then once Al sits down on his stool and the guitar and drums come into the song, all of the storm troopers and darth vadar start dancing behind him. Then once the song slows down to just vocals and piano at the end, they all stopped and went back into statue-mode. And at the end of "The Saga Begins", at the line "We were singing..." All of the storm troopers and darth vadar were swaying back and forth to the music.

All of the storm troopers leave the stage after "The Saga Begins" and Ruben has a little piano solo. Then, they go right into "Yoda". I am proud to say that I have now memorized the new part of the Yoda chant. Which, by the way, the lyrics to the Yoda Chant are completely up to date on the Yoda Chant page (http://weirdalexperience.com/the_yoda_chant ). Anyway, I was able to do the entire Yoda Chant with Al and the band. It was a lot of fun.

Next is "Smells Like Nirvana." The cheerleaders seemed really nervous at this concert. Oh well, it was still good anyway. We got totally drenched by the Smells Like Nirvana water, but sadly did not catch the cup. The crowd was still so energetic in this song as well.

During the video clip after "Smells Like Nirvana," there was a clip of the Michael Stipe interview and Al singing "We all have cell phones, so come on lets get real". That will come into more importance later on in the review. So then he does "Amish Paradise". Which is always so fun to see.

Then came "White & Nerdy." Al comes rolling out on his segway with the red do-rag and White & Nerdy hoodie. It's so cool. However, a quarter of the way through the song Al stops and says "Ladies and Gentleman, there is no reason to play this song. Lets do "Radio Radio." And the band picks up their instruments and they all go into "Radio Radio" wearing their "White & Nerdy" costumes. I found this a bit confusing because the main reason a lot of the people came to see Al's concert that night was to hear "White & Nerdy".

Anyway, he finishes up "Radio Radio" and there is very little applause. But then he comes out and does "Fat". Which is always energetic, but tonight it was EXTEREMELY energetic. After "Fat" he introduces the band and says "Thank You, Goodnight!"

We called him back for an encore and he comes out wearing his hawaiian shirt. He says "Ok, we'll do the song you've all been waiting for". Then he sings "We all have cell phones, so come on lets get real. We all have cell phones, so come on lets get real. Cellphones...lets get real!" and he repeats that line a couple of times with the whole band in it. Then he says  "I want everyone out there who has a cell phone to stand up and wave your cell phones in the air." So, I got up and waved my cell phone and turned around and saw all of these little cell phone lights waving throughout the entire crowd. it was really cool.

When he finished "Cell Phones," he said "We had some technical difficulties before, we're gonna do 'White& Nerdy' again, just for fun, ok?" And everyone went crazy. So I got to see 1 and a half performances of "White & Nerdy." And the second time he and the band were in their normal clothes and there was no segway involved. So it was kind of like a rare performance.

Right after "White & Nerdy" they went right into "Albuquerque." This has to be the best performance of "Albuquerque" I have ever seen. At the end of the song when he says "Kinda lost my train of thought..." He said "Don't you hate it when you are 10 and a half minutes into a 12 minute song and totally space out...man...oh well, lets do it over." And he started over again! I couldn't believe it! It was so funny, and everyone was having a great time! They got all the way up to the part where he says "My mother use to make me a big old bowl of saur...." Then he paused and said "Oh wait, I remember it now..." and he finished the song. It was so great. It ended with confetti shooting out into the audience and Al saying "Thank you, I love you all, Goodnight!"

After the concert, the group got together and took a group photo in front of the stage and just hung out for a little bit. There was no meet and greet. However we did get a chance to meet Miles Jay (Steve Jay's son). He came over and talked to us for a bit. Then Gail, Andy and myself al went back to the hotel to crash. This was possibly the best concert I have ever seen, ever in my life. If you have not seen a "Weird Al" Yankovic concert yet, I highly recommend you do. He puts on one excellent show.
